The premise of Onward makes it sound like a routine family movie. However, Pixar, as usual, spins it into something different.

It is a skillfully made suspense thriller that kept me consistently engrossed, even though I sort of knew where it was going.

An inert production that has little more to say than “she was treated unfairly.”

It takes a bit of an easy way out down the stretch; still, fans of this type of contemporary horror will want to check it out.

The negatives will not matter to those for whom the phrase “cute movie dog” is a massive selling point. For the rest, it adds up to decent.

Those who remember the show will likely be put off by the turn toward horror. Those interested in this have probably never heard of the show

The character is annoying, the humor is mostly of the fart and poop variety and Jim Carrey gives a very irritating performance.

I try not to compare movies, even remakes. That said, it is hard not to be disappointed when one is so good and the other is not.

It has charming stars, but its connected stories prove to be more than it can handle. Still, it is a simple, adult, love story.
