It is not a good movie, though it certainly isn’t the disaster I was expecting, either. It is about two-thirds of a serviceable thriller. That’s not bad for January.

It is good entertainment, doubling as a history lesson. The fact that it makes us consider how crimes are covered today, and how criminals get turned into instant, polarizing, celebrities, is the cherry on top of the sundae.

It is insightful, funny and gently moving as it explores a relationship after it has ended, yet possibly before it is permanently finished.

It is unnerving to see kids going through this, yet what the movie is showing us isn’t that extreme, minus the titular malady. Kids can be cruel. The Plague explores how that feels in an empathetic and convincingly painful way.

It is quite entertaining and serves as a tremendous showcase for Timothée Chalamet’s ability to command the screen.

It is well-cast, pretty and a little too serious, considering how silly the plot is. It may not be completely faithful, but it is an accurate representation of the book.

I wondered when the joy of exploring Pandora would stop being enough. The answer turns out to be approximately 45 minutes into the third entry.

This movie is exactly what you expect it to be. If that is a positive thing, then definitely check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

It is all style and barely any substance. That is a feature, not a bug. It succeeds because of its focus on aesthetics over storytelling.

It is enchanting before the plot kicks in. After that, some of the transportive magic slips away.
