While this definitely doesn’t fall into the excellent category, it is a thoughtful adult drama, with a tremendous performance at its center.

Sometimes, I felt like I got it. Sometimes, I was puzzled. Yet I was always intrigued.

Fast-moving and smart, it is a message movie where the message does not come at the expense of entertainment.

Ben Affleck and screenwriter Alex Convery have done something pretty remarkable here: they have made this story consistently entertaining.

It features an excellent lead performance and does justice to the subtle emotions of its moving story.

I found it to be moving, heartfelt and sympathetic, as well as sad. Brendan Fraser is worthy of every ounce of praise.

The result is bold, uneven, frustrating and entertaining. It may not be great but, since it is so many other fun things, does it need to be.

It is approximately 35% love story, 40% coming-of-age story, 25% horror. That blend ends up working quite well.

Though a lot of viewers likely know at least some of this stuff, hearing it spoken, without melodrama, does have a strong impact.

This definitely feels like a movie that will only become richer and more effecting upon repeat viewings.
